Cost Monitor

Stop cost spikes before the invoice.

A FinOps agent that scans your cloud spend on cron, flags anomalies the day they happen, recommends concrete right-sizing actions, and enforces budget caps through your existing approval flow. Built for teams tired of explaining last month's bill.

Does this match you?

Built for FinOps teams and engineering leaders drowning in cloud bills.

Good fit if you…

  • Spend $10K+/month on AWS, GCP, or Azure and need daily visibility
  • Have caught cost spikes too late and want day-of alerts, not month-end
  • Want right-sizing recommendations with actual impact estimates
  • Need chargeback reports per team, service, or project
  • Want budget caps that halt provisioning without approval

Probably not yet if you…

  • !Need a full FinOps platform with multi-year forecasting and RI management (that's a different tool)
  • !Spend under $1K/month — ROI isn't there yet

Lifecycle

Four ways it runs.

1

Daily cost scan (cron)

Every morning at 07:00 your time, the agent pulls yesterday's spend from AWS Cost Explorer, GCP Billing, or Azure Cost Management. Breaks it down by service, region, project, and tag. Compares to the trailing 7-day baseline.

2

Spike detection & finding

Anything >20% above baseline (configurable) becomes a finding. The agent correlates with recent deploys, autoscale events, and new resource creations to identify root cause — not just "EBS spiked" but "new stateful set deployed yesterday".

3

Right-sizing recommendations

Agent reads CloudWatch/Cloud Monitoring utilization, Compute Optimizer output, and your own telemetry. Proposes concrete changes: "switch 12× m5.xlarge to m5a.large — saves $720/mo, CPU headroom remains 4×".

4

Budget-cap approval flow

Configure monthly caps per project or service. When forecast spend hits 80%, the agent notifies owners. At 100%, any new resource-creation tool call routes through your approval queue — no runaway launches.

What Cost Monitor plugs into.

Cloud billing

AWS · GCP · Azure

Cost Explorer, Cloud Billing export, Cost Management — via read-only credentials from the vault.

Utilization

CloudWatch · Monitoring · Datadog

Right-sizing needs utilization data. Agent reads metrics from your existing observability stack.

Change tracking

Git + deploys

Correlates spikes to recent deploys, Terraform runs, or manual resource creations.

Reporting

Slack · Email · Jira

Weekly briefings to finance/eng leads. Auto-opens Jira tickets for remediation work.

Approval

Budget caps

Forecast-exceeds-cap triggers approval queue. No surprise over-provisioning.
